Educate a woman and you educate a Nation

Group at GalaIn preparation for International Women's Day, A Woman's Day Conference "Step It Up For Gender Equality" was held in St Eustatius, this past weekend.

This event was a production of and powered by COSME (Boosting Caribbean OCT Enterprises), European Commission, St Eustatius Chamber of Commerce and Industry, St Eustatius Tourist Board and S.P.I.C.E - St. Eustatius Production of International Culture and Education.

The welcome address was done by Jr. Minster of Tourism, Kentonea Fortin. The key note address at the meeting was given by Loreto Duffy, Project Manager for the Caribbean Hotel Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Action Program (CHENACT) "Educate a woman and you educate a Nation".

Women from around the region, within various social, ethnic and professional backgrounds, engaged in an all day riveting conference. Here presenters and guests speakers shared strong business presentations and personal testimonials.

Diana Hendrickson-Fleming, GOPA Key Expert/Team Leader and Richard Gill, Executive Project Assistant, 10th EDF Caribbean OCTs SME (COSME) Program SME Regional Project Office, were quoted saying "We are well pleased to have had a part in bringing together some extraordinary women together , meeting and interacting with them was rewarding".

pORTIAThis conference showcased leadership development and refinement, life balance, empowering yourself to be your own CEO, equality in the workforce, conquer the workplace and business challenges. From the BVI, Portia Harrigan of Oyster Global Marketing addressed the conference on business challenges and Dr. Lynda Reid, EdD ACC of Smith and Associates on Leadership Development and Refinement.

Susan TailorThe two day event ended with a celebration of women at a formal gala. The enchanting night welcomed the key guest speaker, none other than former editor-in-chief of Essence Magazine and writer, Susan Taylor. Taylor addressed the keen audience on life's journeys, including her own, strength of self, endurance and courage.

Representing the British Virgin Islands were BVICCHA Members and Partners: Portia Harrigan of Oyster Global Marketing, Sachkia Barnes of Barnes PR, Dr. Lynda Reid, Cisne Benjamin, Kedreana Parsons, Janeanne Phipps and the BVICCHA.
